Florida Keys Permit Fishing

For some anglers, permit are considered the most coveted fly and light tackle gamefish of all to be found in shallow water.

Permit always seem to know what they want, are constantly moving and ever wary. Upon first inspection of a perfectly presented fly, permit will often feign interest, only to turn away at the very last second. Once hooked however, permit are challenging adversaries, capable of incredible displays of power and endurance.

Big permit like this 23 lb beauty are abundant in certain areas. By the way, this was Mike Boyle's first permit!
The lower Florida Keys and the Marquesas, which lie to the West of Key West, have some of the largest and most numerous permit in the world.  In the early months of spring one can have many opportunities at hooking this powerful flats phantom during a typical day of fishing.

"Fishing a long leader - as long as 16' - can make the difference in getting a big permit to eat or swim away."

Permit Fishing Tips:
  • Match color of crab flies to the color of the substrate your fishing. The deeper you fish for permit, the heavier your fly needs to be!

  • If there is a high presence of bonefish in the area, fish with a smaller fly or live bait to get additional hook-ups with bonefish.

"As a long time Key West fisherman, I had become accustomed to the "routine" of fishing in the Keys. Then I was fortunate enough to enjoy a day on your boat! Your expertise in the fishery and the techniques required for superb game fishing were so thorough that even a bad caster like myself caught a 23 lb. permit! I cannot tell you the thrill involved in finally catching a permit after five years without success. You are a tribute to the fine and longstanding traditions inherent in sportfishing and I will be sure to book a trip with you on my next trip to Key West!
