| In Long Island New York waters bluefish can be caught laid-up in shallow waters during the spring and early summer, however, they are largely water column feeders. Typically they are not picky and become an easy target for fly and spin fishermen alike. Bluefish have a very well defined, razor sharp dentition. To aid in hook removal, just about any flies or lures with single barbless hooks will work.
Novice anglers may gain a lot of confidence catching countless numbers of these "choppers" in a fishing trip outing. Once hooked, bluefish are relentless fighters, capable of several head shaking, surging runs! Click» for more info about NY bluefish fishing seasons.

Fly leaders should be shortened to 6-8' with 6" 25lb. braided wire tippets.
Recommended Flies: Durable Ethafoam poppers and deceivers with a generous amount of flash. Colors are not crucial however red/white and orange/yellow dominate my bluefish fly box.

Recommended Lures: Floating surface poppers ( i.e. Smack It Jr.'s) with trailing single hooks like those found on diamond jigs work great. Diamond jigs alone work great too! Try them in white or natural amber color with red tipped tails. | Bluefish Fishing Tips: - When buying poppers for your next bluefish fishing trip charter whether for fly or spin tackle make sure they have a large cupped mouth or face so that they push a lot of water when retrieved. Bluefish will react first to the noise created by the popper and secondly to the flash and or color in the tail!
- Use a shortened leader when fly fishing for bluefish and make sure its stiff enough to turn over those poppers! Example: Use the butt end of a 20 lb. 10-12' extruded leader so your left with a 5-6' tapered piece of mono. Then directly tie on your 6" wire trace with an Albright knot and use a figure eight knot to tie on your fly. Catch 'em up!
