Barracuda, in my opinion, are vastly underrated gamefish. Although they may lack the stamina of tarpon, barracuda strikes are lightning quick and their fight is very unpredictable, making them an excellent adversary on fly rod or light tackle spinning gear!If we happen to encounter weather conditions that are not ideal for sight fishing for bonefish, permit or tarpon, we can target barracuda or other inshore fish species such as jack crevalle or sharks. Sharks are omnipresent in Key West with bonnet head, lemon and spinner sharks topping the list. Sharks guarantee a challenging tug of war. Spinner sharks, as their name implies, will take to the air with impressive aerial displays. | "Weather permitting, there are always gamefish within easy reach. If you haven't tried jack crevalle, barracuda or shark fishing you're missing a great time. Let me show you how!" |

Recommended Flies: Needle fish, ballyhoo imitations, rabbit strip flies in chartreuse and black. 4-6" deceivers and poppers also work for 'cuda. For smaller sharks on the flats, tarpon flies and some of the larger bonefish flies can work! For larger sharks bring chum and use 6-8" Lefty's deceiver flies in orange, red, and white.
Spin Tackle: Barracuda & small sharks = St. Croix II graphite 7' medium heavy powered, fast action spin rods. Larger sharks = Star Stellar Lite 7' IM-6 graphite heavy powered, fast action spin rods. Shimano Sustain 4-8000 spin reels, 20-30 lb. Power Pro synthetic braided fishing line with 20-80 lb. wire trace. Owner #2/0-7/0 bait hooks.
Recommended Lures: For barracuda, tube lures in chartreuse, yellow, and red work as well as diamond jigs in similar colors. Plugs like Bagley's finger mullet and shallow water swimmers in black and silver work well too. As for sharks sometimes you can get a shark to eat a bright tube lure or plug if you swim it close to their face! | Barracuda and Shark Fishing Tips: - You can't beat dead bait like a 'cuda or jack crevalle for fishing sharks. Butterfly the dead bait, hang it overboard and use it to aid in attracting strikes within a chum slick.
- Rig your hooks with strips from your baits and don't forget to chum!
